Yahnusok

To love is to know, so GUNIA continues to present the authenticity of Ukrainian culture to the world in celebration of Valentine’s Day. The new collection “Yahnusok”, inspired by the traditional dukach necklace, embodies delicacy and timelessness — just like true love.

A signature piece of the 17th–20th centuries, the dukach was designed and named after a Venetian gold coin, the ducat. The dukach consisted of a medallion adorned with bows, flowers, and gemstones. Originally, this ornament signified a woman’s elevated social status and was mostly worn by the wives of military officers and Cossacks. Over time, the dukach became a widely used festive piece, reimagined in numerous variations and replicas.

In Ukrainian tradition, a heart-shaped dukach was called yahnusok. This type of pendant emerged under the influence of Western European fashion and the cult of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The twisted jewelry technique is reminiscent of an early 20th-century dukach from the Podillia region. The “Yahnusok” pendant comes in two sizes, available in gold or rhodium plating.
